What’s So Great About Quercetin?

For my patients, Quercetin benefits are many. Over 85% of my patients have a stress response system that’s wound too tight. They suffer from anxiety, insomnia, ADHD-symptoms, and palpitations. I use Quercetin for these symptoms because of its antihistamine properties.

Bioflavonoids are naturally-occurring chemicals in fruits and vegetables and give the foods their color. But they also have various medicinal and health properties. There are many bioflavonoids at our disposal that can be used to heal parts of the brain involved in the stress response, and Quercetin is one of my favorites.

An apple contains about 10mg of quercetin. Based on the research and my experience, 500 to 1500mg of quercetin daily is optimum for Adrenal Fatigue patients.

How Quercetin Heals the Ravages of Chronic Stress

My research on the stress response system has led me more deeply into studies of the brain and hypothalamic neurohormonal chemicals that ultimately control the adrenal output. Research shows that the histamine-producing side of our immune and limbic systems becomes damaged and dysfunctional due to chronic stress.

There are many troublemakers in this group, but I looked primarily at Corticotropin Releasing Hormone (CRH). CRH is from the hypothalamus at the head of the HPA axis and histamine’s relationship to the stress response.

CRH and histamine are tangled with one another, perpetually triggering the stress response in the brain; they contribute to hyper-sensitizing the entire body to stress, our environment, and life itself. This process is referred to as “central sensitization.”

What Is Central Sensitization?

Central sensitization is the process in which our body over-interprets various stimuli as dangerous and thus stress-response inducing. This not only triggers cortisol and adrenaline, but inflammation everywhere, including in the brain—all of which perpetuate the cycle.

This cycle starts in the limbic system in the brain, just above the downline pathway toward the HPA axis. Quercetin controls histamine, thus having a calming and anti-inflammatory effect on the HPA axis, the adrenals, the limbic system, and on “nerves” in general.

This supplement has become indispensable in my healing protocols because it is so safe, gentle, and effective for patients that already have a heightened sensitivity to supplements.

Quercetin Breaks the Stress Cycle

Histamine is an issue for many of my patients with Adrenal Fatigue because of the stress-induced allergic tendency. Histamine is uncomfortable because of the allergic gut and skin reactions it causes, like hives. But more importantly, it has nefarious chemical effects in the brain.

Too much histamine in the brain perpetually triggers the HPA axis. It does this by affecting the Hypothalamus and Pituitary in the brain. Triggering the HPA axis drives the stress response (cortisol and adrenaline). This promotes the cycle of stress that so many people get stuck in.

Quercetin has become indispensable in my healing protocols

Quercetin addresses my patients’ stress response system dysfunction, HPA axis dysfunction, Adrenal Fatigue, and Central Sensitization. I use this particular remedy when patients have a tendency to histamine (allergy, eczema, itch, hives, asthma, insomnia). I also use it when there are indicators of an over-sensitized nervous system.

A sensitized nervous system can show up in the body as lowered stress tolerance, anxiety, depression, insomnia, and pain. Patients can even feel heightened sensory nerves and become bothered by bright lights, sounds, smells. They may even have a heightened startle response.

Of course, Quercetin alone will in no way “fix” Adrenal Fatigue, but it does a great job as a piece of the full Trilateral healing puzzle.
