WHERE SUPPLEMENTS FIT IN

The Cabinet Full of Supplements

When you’re chronically ill, supplements and medications tend to pile up. Things you tried. Things you read about. Things another practitioner recommended. Some helped a little. Many did not.

That is one of the most common frustrations Dr. Neville hears. The problem is not that trying made no sense. It usually did, given what was available to work with.

“Supplements used without a framework tend to produce exactly that result: partial relief, inconsistent outcomes, and a growing collection of bottles that never quite adds up to healing.”

Supplements are one part of treating Adrenal Fatigue. They are not the starting point or the whole healing picture.

Before all but the gentlest support can be added, the stress-response system needs to begin calming.

A nervous system still running in fight-or-flight will resist deeper repair, regardless of what is being taken. The supplements that work best do so because the body is ready to use them, not because they are strong enough to override a dysregulated state.

That changes how the question “What should I take?” gets answered.

For a fuller picture of how that system breaks down, How Adrenal Fatigue Develops explains the progression. If you’re still mapping out the symptom picture, Adrenal Fatigue Symptoms covers what typically shows up across the whole system.

Why Sequence Matters

The order is as important as the selection.

Some supplements are foundational. Almost every patient starts with them because the body needs a nutritional floor before more targeted work can hold.

Others are added later, based on where the system is struggling most: sleep, hormones, digestion, immune function, blood sugar, inflammation, or nervous system regulation. Those supports are introduced only after earlier stabilization has begun.

CALM

Stop the cycle

The stress response has to settle before healing can begin. You can’t repair what’s still on fire.

RESTORE

Get back what stress depleted

Once the body begins to stabilize, targeted support helps restore what chronic stress has burned through.

REBUILD

Expand what’s possible

As regulation improves, capacity returns. Energy, tolerance, and resilience begin to rebuild.

Dr. Neville usually starts patients with the same four foundational supports. These address the nutritional floor that chronic stress erodes over time: minerals, antioxidants, essential fats, and cellular cofactors.

These four do not replace the larger healing process. They help make it possible.

The Foundational Four

The starting point for care. Most regimens begin here.

Dr. Neville usually starts every patient on the same four foundational supplements. These address the nutritional floor that chronic stress has eroded — years of a stress response running too hard depletes the body across the board: minerals, antioxidants, essential fats, cellular cofactors. These four begin to rebuild that foundation.

Unrefined Sea Salt

LIBERALLY SALT FOOD

The first recommendation is not a vitamin or a supplement in the usual sense. It is unrefined sea salt.

The adrenal glands produce aldosterone, a hormone that helps the body hold onto sodium. When adrenal function weakens, aldosterone can drop. Sodium follows, and water follows sodium. That can lead to reduced blood volume, chronic dehydration, dizziness, and lightheadedness.

Dr. Neville often recommends Celtic Sea Salt because it is harvested by hand off the coast of France and retains moisture during drying. That moisture makes its minerals, including magnesium, more bioavailable than the drier Pink Himalayan variety. For sodium-depleted patients, that difference matters more than the mineral numbers on a label.

Vitamin C

BUFFERED MINERAL ASCORBATE

Humans are one of the few mammals that cannot produce vitamin C internally. Under stress, other mammals increase vitamin C production dramatically. Humans have to get it from food and supplementation.

For many Adrenal Fatigue patients, demand far exceeds what food alone provides.

The form matters. Dr. Neville uses buffered mineral ascorbate rather than plain ascorbic acid because it is gentler on the digestive system and better tolerated at higher doses.

Dosing is individualized using bowel tolerance, the point at which the body signals it has more than it can absorb.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

EPA + DHA

Dr. Neville recommends omega-3s beyond standard dosing for a specific reason.

Often, those with Adrenal Fatigue cannot exercise at the level their bodies need for recovery. Over time, that can lead to muscle deconditioning, which compounds fatigue. High-dose omega-3 loading helps reduce that atrophy, preserving muscle mass and mitochondrial function even when activity is limited.

Omega-3s also support nervous system desensitization over time, which matters for patients who react strongly to supplements, environments, and stimulation.

The current recommendation is 4–5 grams daily from food and supplements combined, in pharmaceutical-grade triglyceride form. This form is better absorbed than the ester form found in many commercial products.

High-Quality Multivitamin

ULTRANUTRIENT

A high-quality multivitamin usually does not create an obvious short-term effect. That is expected. It is not meant to do something dramatic. It provides raw materials the body needs for repair.

Chronic stress depletes the nutritional baseline. That baseline cannot be rebuilt without vitamins, minerals, and cellular cofactors.

Quality matters here. Many commercial multivitamins use lower-grade nutrient forms with poor bioavailability, along with fillers, dyes, and preservatives that add burden to a body already struggling to manage its load.

Dr. Neville uses products vetted for ingredient quality and absence of unnecessary additives. UltraNutrient is his current preference, though specific recommendations vary by individual need.

Beyond the Foundational Four

Everybody’s treatment plan is truly individualized.

Once the foundational four are in place, Dr. Neville introduces additional supplements based on symptoms, stage, health history, sensitivity level, and response to initial support. This follows the Calm, Restore, Rebuild sequence.

Nothing mentioned below is automatic. Every regimen looks different, and nothing gets added all at once.

For highly sensitive patients, or those who simply do not tolerate supplements well, healing does not stop there. Nervous system regulation, pacing, nutrition, sleep rhythm, and lifestyle work can move someone forward even when the supplement side stays minimal.

“Most patients need support somewhere, but the order and the mix depend on your symptoms and stage.”

Supplement Areas of Focus

Calming the Nervous System

Supplements for a system that can’t calm enough to heal.

After the foundational four, the next priority is often calming a nervous system still running in fight-or-flight. A body that stays in stress physiology has a harder time using deeper repair support well.

This is where cortisol-calming nutrients, phospholipids, or botanical nervous system formulas may be considered. The choice depends on stage, sensitivity, sleep rhythm, and response to earlier support. In depleted stages, the wrong calming tool can make symptoms worse, which is why timing matters.

Supporting Sleep

The body does the much of its repair during sleep.

Sleep disruption keeps the stress response more reactive. Difficulty falling asleep, frequent waking, early morning waking, or sleep that never feels restorative can all slow recovery because the nervous system does not get enough time in repair physiology.

Targeted sleep support may include nutrients or botanical formulas that help the brain transition into deeper, more restorative sleep. The aim is not to force sedation. It is to restore sleep rhythm and reduce the nighttime stress signaling that keeps the cycle going.

Stabilizing Metabolism & Blood Sugar

Every blood sugar drop adds demand to the stress-response system.

Blood sugar instability is a major driver of stress-response activation. When blood sugar drops, the adrenal glands are asked to release cortisol to bring it back up. For a depleted system, that repeated demand becomes another drain.

Support in this area may include meal rhythm, B vitamins, metabolic nutrients, or targeted tools such as berberine when appropriate. This reduces the number of daily cortisol calls created by blood sugar swings.

Reducing Inflammatory Load

Less burden means less demand on an already overworked body.

Chronic stress increases inflammation and oxidative stress. That inflammatory load becomes another signal the body has to manage, and it can contribute to pain, brain fog, immune reactivity, and overall sensitivity.

Anti-inflammatory and neuroimmune supports such as curcumin, quercetin, resveratrol, or related formulas may be used when this burden is prominent. These are not a shortcut around the stress-response work. They help reduce the load while the larger system is being restored.

Removing Digestive Suppression

Digestion depends on the rest-and-digest state.

A body in chronic fight-or-flight suppresses digestion by default. Stomach acid may drop, motility may change, and the gut lining may become more reactive. That can show up as bloating, reflux, irregular bowel function, food sensitivities, or poor nutrient absorption.

Digestive support may include Betaine HCl, mucosal support, or microbial balance formulas when needed. The aim is to improve digestion while reducing the stress signals coming from an irritated gut.

Mineral & Electrolyte Support

Sodium and potassium help run the cellular pumps every system depends on.

For many patients, increasing unrefined sea salt is enough. Others need additional electrolyte support, especially when dizziness, low blood pressure, rapid sodium loss, headaches, or dehydration symptoms are prominent.

When appropriate, Dr. Neville may recommend an electrolyte powder such as LMNT because of its sodium-to-potassium ratio and lack of added sugar or coloring. This support is individualized. It is not for everyone, but for the right patient it can reduce a major daily strain on the stress-response system.

Why Quality Matters More Than You'd Think

“Yes, I have a cabinet full of supplements.”

That line comes up often in first appointments. The impulse to find something that works makes complete sense. But the supplement industry is largely unregulated, and much of what sits on drugstore shelves is not doing what people think it is.

When Dr. Neville evaluates a supplement, he looks at two things: the quality and bioavailability of the ingredients, and the absence of fillers, dyes, emulsifiers, and low-grade nutrient forms.

Those additives are common in commercial products. For a sensitive patient, they add burden to a body already struggling to manage its load.

The grade matters too. Pharmaceutical-grade forms of B vitamins, minerals, and fat-soluble vitamins are better absorbed and less likely to produce the overstimulation reactions sensitive patients report from cheaper versions.

Dr. Neville works with a small number of vetted suppliers. Some formulas are sourced exclusively through clinician networks because commercial supply chains do not meet the standard required.

Less is more. A smaller number of high-quality supplements, correctly selected for the individual and stage of recovery, consistently outperforms a larger collection assembled without a clinical framework

A Note on Supplement Sensitivity

Adrenal Fatigue patients often react differently to supplements. A product well tolerated by someone with a healthy stress-response system can feel overstimulating, destabilizing, or simply wrong in a dysregulated one.

That reactivity is meaningful information.

If a supplement causes agitation, worsening insomnia, increased anxiety, or a general sense of feeling worse, the body is signaling that it may not be ready for that support yet, or that the dose is too high. Adjusting rather than pushing through is almost always the right call.

One marker of real progress is improved supplement tolerance. Patients who could barely tolerate anything at the start of treatment often handle a broader range later on. The nervous system is recalibrating, and that shift in tolerance reflects it.
